Since I purchased the Turbo Jam DVD workout set a few years ago, I’ve been fascinated with Chalene Johnson’s creativity, chorography and energy. If anybody can make working out fun it’s Chalene.
I recently completed the Turbo Kick certification from Powder Blue Productions Trainer Kristina Sullins. Turbo Kick, also created by Chalene, is similar to the Turbo Jam workout but more intense and intended to be taught by an instructor live in front of a group. Turbo Jam is the at-home version of Turbo Kick. If you’ve not experienced Turbo Kick before, the best way I can think to describe it is that it’s like kickboxing only more fun.
Turbo Kick Training
At the training we learned Round 44 which is a series of jab crosses, blocks, push kicks and turbos to revved up versions of “Bass Down Low”, “Make Me Sweat” and “Disco Pogo”. The training was fast-paced with high-energy music, and an emphasis on ‘dance party’. Kristina was totally passionate about her role as trainer. Her non-stop enthusiasm kept the class moving for eight hours. At the end of the day most of us looked like we had lost the war, but she still looked fabulous.
I decided to attend the training because I needed to get out of my comfort zone for a few hours. As an instructor, when you go into the same gym, teach basically the same classes to the same people you get to a place where you hit such a wall that you’re standing in front of the class thinking that teaching for the next hour is absolutely the last thing you want to do.
My goal as an instructor is to not get in such a rut that I’m phoning it in. I definitely know that when I begin to lose my enthusiasm, there is no way for the class to maintain theirs so I’m always looking for something new. The Turbo Kick course allowed me to spend a day in a different gym, in another town, with people I have never met, doing moves I had (for the most part) not done before. It gave me a much needed infusion of mental stimulation that allowed me to go back to my class ready to teach again.
I’m taking my Turbo Jam DVD set to work and have invited my co-workers to join me for a ‘dance party’ at 5 p.m. tomorrow. I’ve got a bunch signed up to join me.
